Um, the rules of retail are changed.

Welcome to today's episode of retail initiative sorry to be gone last week was traveling and it was just one of those weeks I'm sure that you can resonate a little bit so I had this situation where we were working with a client and I kept talking about like reaching their sales goals. Ah, and what was going to improve sales and everything was about sales and income. Ah, and this client who was awesome was like hey look we've talked about this a lot. But honestly like I don't really care that much about money money is just not that big of a deal. Really what I care about is the impact that I get to make with my customer the impact that I get to make. With my hey um with my team I love getting to hire people and give them a livable wage and I love to you know provide a decent living for my family. Um, which is all good things right? that none of those things are bad but or and but I don't want to say but because it's not. Necessarily contradiction. Um it. It brought to light the fact that I think a lot of us are motivated by different things if you ever had an employee where you maybe you continue to give raises after raises and they just aren't satisfied when really they were never money motivated people. They actually were. Ah, they were motivated by other things whether it be more time off or different types of work life balance. Maybe they just wanted a huge discount at your store. Um, at the end of the day. All of us are motivated by different things and I think as entrepreneurs most of us tend to be tend to be driven.

By 1 of 2 things either the impact that we make we are mission driven. We are impact driven. We want to make an impact on our customers in the world and our team and our family. Ah or we are money driven. We want to grow the business to be as large and as profitable as possible. And what I want to actually encourage you today is if you are one to focus on the other. So first I want to start with the impact driven person. Ah and the hard question I want to ask is is it possible that our goal is too small. Is it possible that our goal is too small. Um, that by saying hey we just want to make an impact what we end up doing is we hold ourself back from actually getting to make ah as large of an impact as we could I realized that that maybe you don't want to be this worldwide famous person impacting every single one. But what if we could impact just a few more than what we do and so there I think that one of the really good things that we can do is if we're impact driven is we could start to focus on revenue because as our revenue grows our impact will grow as well and so here. Ah, if we want to impact our team. We'll imagine the impact that you could have on your team if your revenue doubled would you be able to give a better paying job to more people would you be able to pay your existing people even more would you be able to be involved in your local community even more our impact gets to grow as we grow.

And then on the other end if we're money motivated I think here this is where we have an amazing opportunity to say like okay this is great. But what about the impact that we make because it's so easy and honestly I'm guilty of this one of the things I've been working with my coach on is about. Not being so transactional with even team members of like I give you this therefore you give me this and realizing that um, there's bigger things at play. There's the impact that we get to make on the world and so here we can start to focus on the value that we give our customers really thinking about the thing like think about the thing that you sell. If you sell women's clothing. Do you just sell a dress or like think about you know if you're in fashion this happens for you all the time. But for some people that don't know how to style things they they don't want to put things together and they finally get this outfit that they feel great about themselves in you've just given them self confidence. You've made an impact on their day purely by what you sell think about the team that you have and and what the job that you gave them equips them to do with their families and and the income that they have they now can start to build a better life for themselves. We get to make a massive impact. And so by naturally gravitating towards 1 or the other we can say okay, if I'm money vote motivated I really want to look at the impact I can make because what's incredible here is like when I've shifted my mindset from just money money money to impact is the money actually grew.

And I think that the opposite is true and we're impact driven and we focus them on revenue. Our impact can grow and why is this true? Well I believe like especially with money is money is this neutral force money money isn't good is not bad. It's not anything money simply magnifies who you are. A generous person who makes $50000 a year is still a generous person. They are giving and so when they make 5000000 in a year guess what? they're going to be more generous but someone who who hoards and is not generous with their money at all. When they make $50000 they hoard and they're not generous and when they make 5000000 it's the exact same thing we are who we are and money just magnifies it and so when we can say like okay, but if I if that's true when I'm making an impact and my revenue grows I now get to be even more generous. And so here I think one of the big false beliefs that we have um is the idea that contentment is what to strive for that. We need to strive for contentment in our life contentment in our business and one of the things that my coach taylor welch has shared quite a bit is this idea of like is it. Contentment that we're after or is it gratitude because the 2 are different. You can be incredibly grateful for everything in your life and say like I know I worked hard for this but none of it is owed to me tomorrow tomorrow I'm going to wake up and I'm to earn it again and that's just how life works and we can be grateful for that.

But it doesn't mean that we need to be content forever for everything and exactly where we are and I think when we have gratitude we can accept where we are and say like hey you know what I've worked hard to be here and that that's something that I'm grateful for but I'm I still am ready to go for more. And there that is where this idea that contentment or that gratitude and drive do not contradict each other having a drive for more whether it be more impact or more revenue marry that with coexisting gratitude I Really believe that the sky is the limit like the impact that you're going to make. On your family on your community on your team really on the world is Limitless. So What do you really want in your business and your life.. What do you want out of it is it. Impact. Okay, well if it's impact what could happen if your revenue grew and you could have a greater impact because if you believe in it. If you really believe in the impact that you make why would we not want to have an impact on as many people as possible and if it's revenue and that's your big driver. Um, if we can shift to the value that we provide instead of just growing revenue I think you're going to find that your revenue is going to grow along with it and so. This one's quick. It's super brief. But I think it's important because I believe that both of these are important and I think that if we can learn to balance them with healthy gratitude and drive not contentment and being just okay, staying where we are but saying no I'm still want to get to that next level.
